The Importance of Kicks
As an ex-professional fighter and the one who had the most of his victories by kicks, I can tell you that kicks take way more energy out of your body than than punches. If you want to test this, try to kick above your waist or chest level non-stop for three minutes and see how you feel.
As humans we are rarely lifting our legs higher than our knee level. Therefore, our leg muscles are not used to move our legs that high. Legs are heavy and any time we lift our legs higher than we are used to, it takes a tremendous amount of energy out of us. Repeat it for a few rounds and you’ll get yourself a pretty hard workout. Repeat that workout a few times per week for a couple of months and you’ll get yourself in pretty good shape.
We use kicking techniques extensively in our classes. It gets you in shape and it gets you there fast. Plus, there is something special about kicks, it makes you feel very empowered every time you throw that kick with a full conviction. It becomes fun! And who would say no to having a good time especially when it is combined with a great workout?
