How do you know if you are working out hard enough?
One question I get asked all the time from my students is how do I know I am pushing myself hard enough when I exercise? You train, you sweat, you feel the pain in your muscles. But is it enough?
As humans we are wired for survival, your subconscious mind will do whatever it takes to keep you safe. That includes fear like not stepping off the building or putting your hand in a camp fire.
When you exercise, your brain will try to make you stop sooner and do the exercise in the easiest way possible. Most people who can do 10 push-ups will stop at 8, because at that point it hurts. If you want to see better results, do 9 or 10. So how should 10 feel? If your life depends on it, you will not be able to do 11, that is how. If you train and after each set you feel like your legs are shaky and they burn like they are on fire, you are doing it right. If you feel like your heart is about to jump out of your chest after high intensity cardio set, you are pushing yourself hard enough.
You need to train according to your fitness level and goals. If you feel a sharp pain anywhere, do not continue, stop. If you feel nauseous or light headed, stop and recover. But never train till 8 reps, always get to 10!
